    Swim Team Leadership

Being a leader is a privilege, challenge and responsibility. To do your job effectively, you must bring out the best in your teammates and be able to deal with them when they are at their worst. All leadership begins with self-leadership. People will respect you as a leader only if you can lead yourself effectively. You must model the commitment and work ethic you expect from your teammates. We expect you to set a strong example especially for our younger swimmers.

There are two ways for our older Manchester Tritons swim team members to become team leaders: as a team captain or as a volunteer coaching assistant.

The role of a team captain is to serve as a leader of the swim team and a role model for our swim team members both in and out of the pool; this role is intended for seasoned swimmers who are prepared to take on each of the team captain responsibilities described below.

The role of a volunteer coaching assistant is to assist our coaches and team captains with beginner practices. This role is intended for swimmers aged 13 and above who are prepared to take on each of the volunteer coaching assistant responsibilities described below.

    Team Captain Responsibilities:

    • Arrive 10 minutes before practice begins
    • Work with coaches planning meet entries
    • Lead stretching during practices and meets
    • Support and encourage swimmers during meets
    • Assist coaches with training younger swimmers
    • Attend and assist any team bonding events
    • Lead cheers and get younger swimmers involved
    • Attend championship meets for younger age groups
    • Pass out event strips at each meet
    • Teach parents of younger and new swimmers how to write events on their arms at meets

    Volunteer Coaching Assistant Responsibilities:

    • Attend one or more beginner practices a week (arriving 10 minutes before practice begins) to assist coaches and captains with the beginner swimmers; this will require being in the pool with one lane of beginner swimmers to help them learn proper technique and stay focused and engaged in practice
    • Support and encourage beginner swimmers during meets
    • Attend and assist beginner swimmers with any team bonding events
    • If asked by the coaches or captains, help pass out event strips at each meet
    • If asked by the coaches or captains, teach parents of younger and new swimmers how to write events on their arms at meets

If you would like to apply to be a team captain or a volunteer coaching assistant for the Manchester Tritons PLEASE ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS (minimum of one paragraph each):

    1. Why do you want to be team captain or volunteer coaching assistant?

    2. How will you set an example for the other swimmers?

    3. How do you define a leader and why do you consider yourself one?

    4. How will you get your teammates to respect and listen to you?

Team captain and volunteer coaching assistant applications should be provided by email to [email protected] by June 20, 2025. Team captains and volunteer coaching assistants will be selected by the coaches. The coaches will also determine the number of team captains and volunteer coaching assistants needed.
